GE Vernova’s FLEXRESERVOIR (BESS system) will be comprised of FLEXIQ Controls, FLEXINVERTER central inverters and Battery DC Blocks, which will be scaled to meet the capacity of the project and provide balancing and capacity services to the national grid. Additionally, GE Vernova has been contracted to provide a long-term service agreement, utilizing its national services team to deliver maintenance services.

The Sambar Power project comes at a highly relevant time for the UK, not only in supporting the UK Government’s move to net zero, but by providing much needed new-build investment into a sector that is expected to be integral to managing the supply and demand flow of renewable energy.  For example, the 47.5MW – 2 hour duration – Sambar Power project is projected upon completion to be able to power the energy equivalent of 30,000 homes in the UK with cleaner power and is situated within an historically congested part of the UK electricity grid.

Varco, an Adaptogen Capital funded battery storage operating company, is on a mission to drive the energy transition to a net-zero future by building flexible storage assets. By helping to integrate renewable energy generation and balance the grid, Varco makes sustainable energy accessible and affordable for all consumers.

James Mills, Director, Varco Energy said:

“BESS are critical infrastructure to help balance the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation and break the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels. We are therefore delighted to collaborate with GE Vernova on the 47.5MW – 2 hour duration – Sambar Power project. At Varco we are committed to investing in assets that will accelerate renewable integration, sustain a resilient grid and drive consumer value in the UK. This is Varco’s second project contracted with GE Vernova and the third overall, as the company continues to expand its portfolio of utility-scale BESS across the U.K.”

Prakash Chandra, President & CEO, GE Vernova’s Solar & Storage Solutions business said:

“GE Vernova is delighted to be chosen by Varco to provide a national grid connected Battery Energy Storage System for their Sambar Power project in Cornwall. Our FLEX portfolio being deployed here is designed to provide flexible, reliable and intelligent solutions that help solve complex renewable integration and grid challenges while maximizing value for customers. We hope to advance our common mission of providing dispatchable and reliable clean energy that will benefit thousands of people, while contributing to the transition to a clean energy future in the UK.”
