Foxconn chairman Young Liu has told Indian agency The Press Trust of India (PTI) his company is considering a battery energy storage system manufacturing unit in India.

The business is already developing a battery cell plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. That site, which is intended to reach 1.2 GWh of annual production capacity, will produce LFP batteries for electric buses, passenger cars, and stationary storage.

Although Foxconn is focused chiefly on electric vehicles (EVs) – with Liu telling PTI the business is also considering an Indian EV manufacturing base – the company has developed lithium metal anode solid-state batteries, in collaboration with Blue Solution, of Canada, and claims it has reached an energy density of 400 Wh/kg for those products.

EVs are one of three “future industries” Foxconn is focusing on as part of its development strategy, alongside digital health and robotics.
