Greenko to develop 3.3 GW of pumped storage projects in India
Hyderabad-based Greenko has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to build three pumped hydro storage projects with a total capacity of 3.3 GW in Tamil Nadu. The projects will be developed in the Tirupathur, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai districts.
Greenko is building more than 100 GWh of energy storage capacity across India to enable it to guarantee 24-hour carbon-free electricity for its clients. On its website, Greenko says its “world’s largest energy cloud platform” is based on closed-loop pumped hydro storage which is not river-dependent.
The developer is building India’s largest pumped hydro storage project, in the Khemla block of Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh state. The site, which has a capacity of 1.44 GW, with 7.5 hours of energy storage, is being expanded to 1.92 GW with six hours’ storage, to be able to provide 11 GWh daily.
Greenko has 7.5 GW of pumped hydro, solar, and wind generation capacity across 15 Indian states, with 50 GWh of storage capacity set to be active by 2025. An additional 50 GWh of storage is planned for the following years with the 100 GWh to be digitally managed via Greenko’s cloud-based platform.
Greenko president and joint managing director Mahesh Kolli signed and exchanged the MoU for the Tamil Nadu projects with the state government in the presence of Tamil Nadu chief minister, MK Stalin, and Greenko Group CEO and managing director Anil Chalamalasetty.
