Fluence to supply 58 MWh battery for German solar-plus-storage site
Fluence will team up with Statkraft for the sixth time by supplying the battery energy storage system (BESS) for Germany’s biggest solar-plus-storage hybrid project, in Zerbst.
Fluence – a JV formed by the AES Energy Storage business of US-based utility AES Corp. and Siemens – will supply the 16 MW/58 MWh BESS for a site with 47 MW of solar generation capacity in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The project was awarded to Norwegian state-owned clean power company Statkraft under the innovation tenders run by German grid regulator the Federal Network Agency, which aim to drive more hybrid sites.
Markus Meyer, managing director of Fluence Energy GmbH, said, “The increased focus on deploying renewable energy combined with storage assets is a great opportunity for Germany. Large-scale battery storage systems ensure energy security, limit curtailment, and are a forward-looking solution for the energy system. As a company with German roots and heritage, we are excited to work with our partners on transforming the way we power Germany for a more sustainable future.”
Fluence, announcing the contract win in a press release, said it had worked with Statkraft on five previous clean energy projects, including in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
