Italy launches new one-stop application system for battery projects
From Dec. 2, 2024, a new “single authorization” online permitting portal will be available for standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) developers.
The digital service, available via the Mase website, is intended to be rolled out to simplify permitting for all types of energy infrastructure but will process only standalone BESS – sites not linked to clean energy generation projects – at the outset.
The new service will offer a single destination for all permitting procedures which come under Mase’s jurisdiction.
The online portal will replace use of the paid-for, certified electronic mail (PEC) system for such permitting procedures. Only applications which have received notification from Mase of the start of permitting services, before Dec. 2, will continue to be processed using the PEC system.
Applications which have not received such notification by Dec. 2 will be processed on the new platform, under the same protocol number and in the chronological order they were received. Applicants whose requests are transferred in this manner will receive instructions, via PEC, on how to access and use the new service.
Mase recommends new applications be started by activating an account on the new portal, which will be managed by a division of the ministry’s energy department.
