1 GWh battery tender opened in India

NHPC Ltd. is tendering for 500 MW/1 GWh of standalone, grid-connected battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The winning projects will be eligible for viability gap funding, provided by central government to ensure infrastructure projects are financially viable.
The BESS will be charged by the state’s power distribution companies, who will use the projects twice daily to meet morning and evening peak electricity demand.
NHPC, nominated by India’s Ministry of Power as implementing agency, will sign battery energy storage purchase agreements with the successful bidders.
Selection will follow a Single Stage Two Envelope e-bidding process:
- Envelope I: Technical Bid
- Envelope II: Financial Bid
- Followed by a reverse auction.
The closing date for project bids will be on March 17.
India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, and figures in the tender suggest that India is projected to install 8,680 MW/34,720 MWh of battery storage as part of the country’s capacty capacity from 2027-28 onwards, alongside 7,446 MW of pumped hydro storage.
