1 GWh Chilean battery enters environmental assessment

Spanish oil and gas company Energía Plus has submitted documents to Chile’s Environmental Impact Assessment Service for its Camarones Electric Energy Storage System project, planned in Elqui, in the commune and region of Coquimbo.
The 200 MW/1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) would feature 315 containerized lithium-ion battery units, each with a storage capacity of 4.07 MWh.
The 13.57-hectare site would feature 109 4.6 MW direct-current to alternating-current inverters; 0.69 kV/33 kV transformers; an 875 m, 33 kV underground trunk line; 33 kV and 220 kV step-up substations; a 220 kV overhead line; a sectioning substation; and two sections of 220 kV power lines for connection to Chile’s National Electric System.
The project, which would begin operation in November, will store excess grid electricity for release during periods of peak demand. With a projected 20-year lifetime, the site would require a $350 million investment and would generate 30 construction jobs and four permanent operations positions.
