Norwegian clean energy investor Magnora has secured Italian land in areas it said are well positioned for the country’s planned energy storage auctions.

The investor, which already owns battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Italy, said on Wednesday, interest in battery storage is high in relatively isolated regions such as the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

Referring to the upcoming MACSE storage auction planned this year, Magnora said, “Our co-development partner in Puglia has identified and de-risked a 250 MW portfolio with very high potential for success in the first MACSE auctions, scheduled for the second half of 2025. The auctions have attracted considerable interest and the lack of suitable sites should ensure reasonable margins for developers.”

Magnora CEO Erik Sneve said battery investment can yield quick returns and labeled Italy one of Europe’s most promising BESS markets.

The Norwegian investor has backed BESS projects in Italy, England, Germany, and South Africa; offshore wind in Norway and Scotland; solar in South Africa, Norway, and England; and onshore wind sites in South Africa.
