Brazilian energy storage company UCB and the US-based Powin have signed a strategic partnership relating to energy storage in Brazil, with a focus on 30 MW-plus, utility-scale projects.

Brazil is preparing to launch a first grid Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP) dedicated exclusively to energy storage, this year.

UCB and Powin are targeting the LRCAP and want to provide scalable, tested, optimized BESS.

Brazilian partner UCB, which has a factory in Manaus, has delivered more than 65,000 remote, off-grid energy storage systems and manufactured more than 120 million lithium batteries.

Oregon-based Powin provides BESS, its Pod hardware platform, and its proprietary StackOS software. The company has supplied more than 17 GWh of energy storage projects with the help of strategic supply chain partnerships.

“The demand for large-scale energy storage in Brazil is set to grow exponentially as the country advances its transition to renewable energy and strengthens its electrical infrastructure,” said Marcelo Rodrigues, UCB vice president for sales and innovation. “This partnership with Powin reinforces our commitment to bringing world-class solutions to the Brazilian market, tailored to local needs and opportunities.”

Powin Chief Revenue Officer Mark Babcock said, “As a global leader in energy storage, we are delighted to be collaborating with UCB to unlock the potential of the Brazilian market. Our proprietary technology and supply chain expertise, combined with UCB’s local presence and regulatory expertise, will set a new standard for utility-scale energy storage in the region.”
