Germany’s RWE and coal company Peabody plan 5.5 GW of US solar and batteries
German energy group RWE and United States mining company Peabody are cooperating on project development of open-space photovoltaic parks and battery energy storage systems (BESS), with “more than 5.5 GW” planned.
At the center of the cooperation is the R3 Renewables clean energy developer founded by Peabody in 2022, and investment companies Summit Partners Credit Advisors and Riverstone Credit Partners.
R3 uses former Peabody coal mines for its projects. RWE will acquire a majority stake in R3 from Summit and Riverstone and Peabody will retain a 25% stake in the developer.
RWE and Peabody will develop “solar and battery storage projects on an industrial scale on reclaimed mining land,” the companies announced.
The 5.5 GW project pipeline includes 10 possible sites in the states of Indiana and Illinois. RWE will acquire seven of those and will enter into a joint venture with Peabody for the remaining three.
